WAYNE — Memorial services for Hallie Sherry, 99, Wayne, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, at the First United Methodist Church in Wayne. The Rev. Kyle Nelson will officiate. She died Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2018, at Faith Regional Health Services in Norfolk. Stonacek Funeral Chapel in Norfolk is in charge of the arrangements. Memorials should be directed to deaf research Gallaudet University, Washington, D.C., or the Orville and Hallie Scholarship Fund at Wayne State College or First United Methodist Church in Wayne. She was born Oct. 5, 1919, at Raleigh, N.C., to Hallie and T.M. Phillips. She graduated from Hugh Moron High School in 1936, and Mrs. Hardbarger’s Secretarial School in 1937. She joined the Woman’s Army Auxiliary Corps in 1943. This later became the Woman’s Army Corps. She performed recruiting duty in St. Louis, Mo., before going overseas. Mrs. Sherry was among the first WACs to arrive in the South Pacific theater in May 1943. She was an information specialist, writing war stories on heroism and sending them to the soldiers’ hometown newspapers while serving in Australia, New Guinea, Biak and Manila. She obtained the rank of sergeant. On April 13, 1946, she married Orville M. Sherry in Raleigh, N.C. She moved to Wayne and became secretary and treasurer of Sherry’s Inc. In 1963, she graduated from Wayne State College and taught reading and English in Wakefield, Winside and Wayne high schools. She also taught English at the Department of Corrections at the main prison in Lincoln. While in Lincoln, she and her spouse were house parents at a girls group home for 13 months. Upon returning to Wayne in 1980, she became the first coordinator of Haven House and held the position until her retirement. Survivors include her son, Edward and his spouse Linda Sherry of Sioux Falls, S.D.; a daughter, Lee Sherry and her spouse, Norman Small of Norfolk; and daughter Jan Krien and spouse Troy Krien of Lincoln; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and two nieces. She was preceded in death by her spouse, Orville M. Sherry; her parents; one brother, T.M.; and two sisters, Ruth Riley and Betty Case.
