STANTON - Celebration of life service for Karla S. Schmidt, 60, of Stanton, will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, January 29, 2024 at Stonacek Funeral Chapel in Norfolk with Pastor Donald Engebretson officiating the service. Visitation will be held from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m., Sunday, also at Stonacek Funeral Chapel in Norfolk. Karla died unexpectedly on Tuesday, January 23, 2024 at her residence in Stanton. Stonacek Funeral Chapel in Norfolk is in charge of the arrangements. Karla was born on May 8, 1963 in Corning, Iowa to parents Jerry Lee and Carol Kay (Lee) Sickels. She joined older sister, Kristy and later younger sisters, Kathi, Kay and Kim completed the family of five girls. She started school in Iowa before the family moved to Missouri. She attended school in Mount Vernon, MO and graduated from Mount Vernon High School in 1981. Karla worked for many years and eventually moved to Nebraska. For over 14 years she worked for Sherwood Medical Supply south of Norfolk. Karla married Douglas Schmidt on May 21, 1999 in Norfolk, NE at Our Savior Lutheran Church. They were blessed with daughter, Amanda Francis on June 28, 2000. She threw herself in to the roll of wife and mother when she was able to be a stay-at-home mom after Doug bought his own truck and began his trucking business in 2005. This allowed her to volunteer for school projects, class trips, 4-H Club, FFA and Girl Scouts. Karla was a volunteer for many years at the Stanton County Fair, local foodbank, and the Orphan Grain Train. Karla was a member of the Faith Lutheran Church in Stanton, NE. She loved gardening, reading, traveling, quilting, and baking. Karla is survived by husband Doug Schmidt, daughter Amanda Schmidt, the boys Nick (Bridget) Schmidt, Zach (Ashley) Schmidt, four grandsons Franklin, Bennett, Sawyer, Henry Schmidt; mother Carol Sickels, sisters Kristy Hill, Kathi Donahew, Kay Sickels, Kim Hardenberger, brothers-in-law, Gene (Lisa) Schmidt, sister-in-law Bev Schmidt Hurst, numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. Karla was preceded in death by grandparents Florance and Francis Sickels, Virgil and Ruby Lee; father Jerry Sickels, and father-in-law Ralph Schmidt, and brother-in-law Robert Schmidt.
