STANTON -- Mary Medema-Shipps, 72, of Stanton, Nebraska, formerly of Rowena, South Dakota, passed away on Wednesday, May 12, 2021 at her home in Stanton. Memorial services will be 2:00 p.m., Monday, May 17, 2021, at George Boom Funeral Home & On-Site Crematory, Sioux Falls. Stonacek Funeral Home of Norfolk was entrusted with local arrangements in Nebraska. She attended school in the Sioux Falls area and later earned her GED. She was united in marriage to Paul Medema on May 25, 1963. They lived in Rowena for over 33 years. Paul passed away in 2007. In her spare time, she enjoyed golfing with Paul and they were members of Meadow Acres Golf Club. Other hobbies included collecting antiques and spending time with her family. You didn’t dare call Mary at 6:30 p.m., in fear of interrupting Wheel of Fortune. Mary was united in marriage to Leroy Shipps on October 4, 2012, and moved to Nebraska to live with him. Leroy and Mary wintered in Arizona until her health no longer allowed it. Mary had a caring heart that flowed from her to you. She was a work supervisor for Sioux Vocational Services for many years. Later she cared for residents at Bethany Meadows in Brandon. Mary was a past member of East Side Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls and Beaver Valley Lutheran Church in rural Valley Springs. She was a current member of Mt. Olive Lutheran Church in Norfolk, Nebraska. Left to cherish her memory are her husband Leroy Shipps of Stanton, NE; children, Paula (Kenneth) Yesda of Sioux Falls, Christie Medema of Sioux Falls, and Chad (Shawna) Medema of Brandon, SD; siblings, Florence Geiken of Florida, Douglas (Jayne) Toussaint of Oklahoma, and DeWayne (Helen) Toussaint of New Mexico; along with many grandchildren, great grandchildren, and all of Leroy’s family. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ray and Martha Toussaint; infant daughter, Sherrie; husband, Paul Medema; siblings, Wayne Toussaint, Shirley Williamson, Michael Toussaint, and Sharon Toussaint; and granddaughter, Maranda Yesda.
