Walter Fleer Jr.

NORFOLK -- Services for Walter Fleer Jr, 89, of Hoskins will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Community Bible Church in Norfolk with burial in Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery and the Revs. George Heusinger and Arin Hess officiating. Visitation will be 3-8 p.m. Friday at Stonacek Funeral Chapel. He died Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2012, at Faith Regional Health Services. He was born Feb. 14, 1923, at Winside to Walter and Anna (Langenberg) Fleer Sr. He attended District 77 Wayne country school and graduated from Hoskins High School in 1940. When Walter Jr. was just 14 days old, he and his parents moved to a farm northwest of Hoskins. He continued to live there until his death. He was baptized by Rev. W.W. Schroer on April 9, 1923, and was confirmed by Rev. Charles Riedesel May 1936. He and his father farmed and fed cattle. On June 2, 1946, he married Arlene Marie Soden of Winside. His parents moved to Norfolk, and the young couple moved to the family farm, continuing to farm and feed cattle. Walt enjoyed his horses and cattle, but he loved his family best. He had a driving team which he used on a restored buggy and a Belgian team that pulled a corn picking wagon. Walt was an honorary member of Norfolk Mutual Insurance Company of Norfolk. Walt and Arlene are members of Coummunity Bible Church. Survivors include wife Arlene Fleer of Hoskins; daughters Cheryl (John) Witzel of Pleasant Dale, Nancy (Peter) Varhola of Spring Valley, Calif., Carol (Bernard) Wrede of Pierce; sons Mark (Lois) Fleer of Hoskins, Robin (Jane) Fleer of Hoskins, David (Lavonne) Fleer of Pierce; 16 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren; sister Marjorie Heusinger of Norfolk; brother-in-law Dr. George Heusinger of Norfolk; sister-in-law Mary Ann Soden of Norfolk. He was preceded in death by parents Walt and Anna Fleer Sr. and a granddaughter, Jill Wrede. Music will be by pianist Anne Marie Hess and soloist Amy Fleer on "Amazing Grace" and congregational hymns "How Great Thou Art," "In The Garden. Casket bearers are Michael Fleer, Raymond Fleer, Dean Fleer, Steven Fleer, Ryan Witzel, Dan Dohmen. Honorary bearers are grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
