RANDOLPH – Mass of Christian Burial for Walter "Wally" Gubbels Jr., 91, of Randolph, will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, November 4, 2023 at the St. Jane Frances de Chantal Catholic Church, Randolph. Father Kevin Vogel, Deacon Doug Tunink will be officiating. Interment will be held at the St. Frances Catholic Cemetery, rural Randolph. Visitation will be 4:00-7:00 p.m., Friday, also at the St. Frances Catholic Church with a vigil service beginning at 7:00 p.m. Military rites will be provided by the V.F.W. Alvin Kessler Post #5545, American Legion Post #113, and United States Air Force Honors Guard. The service will be live-streamed on the Stonacek Funeral Chapel Facebook page. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be sent to Hospice Care in Wayne, NE. Wally passed away at his residence with his family by his side on Monday, October 30, 2023. Stonacek Funeral Chapel in Randolph is in charge of the arrangements. Wally was born on November 11, 1931 to Walter and Irene (Gerber) Gubbels Sr. at his folk’s family farm, rural Sholes, Nebraska. He attended grade school at Sholes and graduated from St. Frances Catholic High School in Randolph in 1949. He joined the Air Force in 1951 and served as an inflight refueling boom operator out of Biggs Air Force base in El Paso TX until 1955. He returned home to farm and married Detta Rameil on September 11, 1956 at St.'s Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Bow Valley, NE. Wally and Detta farmed east of Randolph and later moved into Randolph in 1995. Wally retired in 2008. After he retired Wally enjoyed gardening and traveling. He was a member of the St. Frances Catholic Church in Randolph, Parish Council, Knights of Columbus, American Legion, and Randolph Farm Supply. Survivors include his wife Detta Gubbels of Randolph, children Jeff (Suz) Gubbels of Randolph, Barb Gubbels of Norfolk, Chris (Kent) Steiner of Norfolk, Tony (Denise) Gubbels of Randolph, Gary (Jeri) Gubbels of Randolph, 13 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren, siblings Gilbert (Mimi) Gubbels of Cedar Falls, Iowa, sister Donna (Jim) Lackas of Randolph, and sister-in-law Rita Gubbels of Randolph. He was preceded in death by his parents Walter Sr. and Irene; two brothers Richard Gubbels and Ronald Gubbels, sister Frances Lenhoff, and brother-in-law Charles Lenhoff. Pall bearers will be his grandsons Jason Gubbels, Adam Gubbels, Zach Steiner, Jake Steiner, Mark Steiner, Austin Gubbels, Ajay Gubbels, and Aiden Gubbels. Honorary pall bearers will be his granddaughters Samantha Leimser, Ashley Boyer, Tara Valenzuela, Amanda Gubbels, and Skyler Gubbels.
