Gilbert H. Peters

PIERCE -- Gilbert H. Peters, 84, died Wednesday, May 9, 2012, at the Norfolk Veterans Home. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the United Church of Christ at Pierce with burial in Prospect View Cemetery and military rites by American Legion Post 72 and the U.S. Marine Corps Honor Guard. Visitation will be 3-8 p.m. Sunday at Stonacek Memorial Chapel in Pierce. The Rev. Terry Buol will officiate. He was born April 23, 1928, in rural Pierce to Henry A. and Hattie (Luebe) Peters. He was baptized into the United Church of Christ with church membership June 28, 1962. He attended Pierce Public Schools to the eighth grade and received his GED later in life. He served in the Korean War with the U.S. Marines and was enlisted from Dec. 5, 1951, to Dec. 4, 1953, serving as a corporal. He married Ruth Ellis on July 28, 1953, at Las Vegas, Nev. They farmed in the Osmond and Pierce area. In August of 1998 they moved to Pierce. Gilbert enjoyed thinking of new inventions and gardening. He was a resident of the Pierce Manor in September of 2007 and the Norfolk Veterans Home in April of 2008. Lodge and church affiliations were the United Church of Christ Church, Pierce, and past church trustee and American Legion, Pierce, and past board member of the Pierce Co-Op. Survivors include wife Ruth Peters of Pierce; two sons, James and wife Jane Peters of Pierce, Russell and wife Melissa Peters of Pierce; three daughters, Norma Jean and husband Larry Krueger of Foster, Bonnie and husband Larry Uher of Pierce, Diana and husband Tony Krueger of Pierce; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; brother Harlan and wife Maryann Peters of Pierce; sister Irma Barnes of Pharr, Texas; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Evelyn Miller and Henrietta Barnes. Organist will be Jill Waterbury with a duet by Rick and Cheryl Higgins.
